For decades, Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions has been known for producing some of Hindi cinema’s biggest blockbusters. Its successful films include Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Kal Ho Naa Ho, My Name Is Khan and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani.
The production house is now expanding its presence in film distribution. Reports suggest Dharma Productions is actively looking to distribute strong regional and pan India films, aiming to release them on a wider scale across domestic and international markets.
Its biggest move so far is securing the India theatrical distribution rights for Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana: Part I. The deal is being described as one of the largest distribution agreements in recent Indian cinema.
According to reports, the distribution rights have been acquired for around Rs. 350 crore. The reported deal reflects the industry’s confidence in the Ranbir Kapoor, Yash and Sai Pallavi starrer ahead of its Diwali release.
The acquisition has the potential to become a milestone for Dharma Productions’ distribution business. If Ramayana: Part I performs strongly at the box office, it could emerge as one of the company’s biggest distribution successes.
This is not Dharma Productions‘ first major venture into film distribution. The company has previously distributed the Hindi versions of blockbuster films such as Baahubali and Devara: Part 1. It has also handled the release of regional films including The Ghazi Attack, Kaantha, Chatha Pacha: The Ring of Rowdies, Jindagi Once More and Ikk Kudi.
The company is also distributing this week’s Tamil biographical drama GDN, starring R. Madhavan, across Karnataka and North Indian markets. This reflects its growing focus on expanding beyond Hindi cinema.
With established distributors such as Yash Raj Films, Zee Studios, Pen Studios and Reliance Entertainment already operating across India, Dharma Productions is making a strong push into the distribution business. If Ramayana: Part I meets expectations, it could mark a significant new chapter for the company as a leading film distributor.
