Girish Johar Exposes OTTs Killing Theatrical & Satellite Business

Producer and film business analyst Girish Johar has recently opened up on the changes that Bollywood is going through over the years and the impact that it has left in the current situation of the film industry.

Girish said that satellite rights are something that does not hold a lot of importance anymore. He said that the price of the satellite rights has always been the highest, and it has now decreased by almost 50%, which means that its value has reduced.

Furthermore, Girish claimed that almost Rs. 100 crores or more were paid for the satellite rights of any film. He said that the OTT has already become popular among the audience and the growth has been somewhere between 15-20%.

Girish further stated that the OTT’s popularity has additionally decreased by the same rate. He mentioned that internet availability is one of the main reasons, as tier-2 and tier-3 cities are still using mobile data to access anything, which leads to issues such as video buffering.

Girish continued speaking about OTT, saying that streaming platforms used to pay the price as per the demand of the producer, which was twice of thrice of the film’s cost.

However, the OTT platforms understood that the acquisition of films wouldn’t help to bring new subscribers, following which they started linking the price of the digital rights to the box office performance of a film. Girish said that the OTTs now believe that the producer would be real in terms of the price.

Girish’s interview has proved that OTT has undoubtedly impacted a lot of things in the film industry. It remains to be seen if things change over the next few years, or will the increased usage of OTT will impact the existence of theatres in any manner.
