Pan-India Obsession Ruined Bollywood’s Legacy

Bollywood used to make beautiful rom-coms in the past including Jab We Met, Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahaani, Kal Ho Na Hoo, and Wake Up Sid and the list is endless.

The nostalgic factor might grow for these films making them a true masterpiece despite being decent but the main debate is that this decency is hard to find in today’s Bollywood.

Looking at the rom-coms now, there are only a handful of films that stand out. The rest of them are failed projects with poor performances and predictable plots.

What made iconic rom-coms true gems were the dialogues, music tracks, supporting actors and the overall production set which looked more real.

As the production phase evolves, it keeps getting worse and unrealistic. This quality can be seen in the recently released Nadaaniyan which fails to connect to the viewers.

On the other hand, the simple yet problematic life of Sid in Wake Up Sid is quite relatable and the dialogues seem to be more real than any other rom-com released nowadays.

Bollywood was always ahead of any other film industry in terms of romantic comedies and music, but as Bollywood aims to replicate the South industry with its Pan-Indian vision, things get underwhelming for a promising rom-com genre.

By focusing more on visual effects and star power, powerful scripts and ideas are being overlooked hence creating no connection with the audiences.

Films like Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na created a beautiful bond with the audiences with its plot and relatable performances by Imran Khan and other co-actors.

As Bollywood sinks into the rom-com genre, it is high time for the industry to revive this genre and produce more masterpieces with a blend of romance and witty humor.
