Marriage Is Outdated!: Jaya B’s Comment Explodes

Jaya Bachchan speaks on marriage norms

Jaya Bachchan, 77, stirred debate after calling marriage an “outdated institution” at the We The Women event in Mumbai. Speaking to her granddaughter Navya Naveli Nanda, who turns 28 soon, she advised her to enjoy life instead of rushing into marriage. She even likened marriage to the Delhi ladoo you eat it and suffer, skip it and regret.

Despite her nearly fifty-year marriage to Amitabh Bachchan, she argued that young people today value emotional, mental and physical compatibility over tradition. She said her generation never had that freedom. Her statement raised eyebrows due to the contrast between her long marriage and her advice to younger women.

Her comments arrived while she continues an active term in Rajya Sabha. She attends sessions regularly and speaks often on women’s issues. Yet questions remain over the Samajwadi Party nominating her for a fifth term till 2030 instead of giving space to ground-level leaders.

Online reactions turned harsh. X users called her views arrogant and privileged, claiming her confidence came from her family’s name. One joked that she could start a World War over a simple “Bye Madam,” referencing her clashes with paparazzi.

Reddit discussions suggested she may reflect on sacrifices in her career after marriage. Instagram stayed divided while some supported her for speaking boldly, others labelled her elitist and out of touch with Indians who see marriage as social support. The debate widened far beyond the event.

Still, Jaya Bachchan spoke without hesitation. Few celebrities talk this openly, fully aware of Trollers waiting online. This is her right to free expression, and the response shows how quickly strong opinions attract backlash, especially when they challenge tradition.
