Horror Thriller U/A Certified: Not Scary Enough?

Kajol's Maa

Kajol’s Maa is all set to release this upcoming Friday in theatres, and the censorship work has been completed. While the trailer and promotional material hinted that the film might get an A certificate, CBFC has surprisingly provided a U/A 16+ rating to the film.

Notably, CBFC did not ask for any cuts in visuals or dialogues, which means that people under the age of 18 can watch the film. A source close to the matter stated that the film has a few disturbing sequences.

Although there were no cuts, CBFC told the makers to expand the disclaimer length to a readable time. Apart from that, the makers were told to include anti-girl child and human sacrifice information, and mention the film’s title in Hindi alongside English.

The film’s censorship was completed on June 20, 2025, and the length is said to be 135.35 minutes, which means that it will run for 2 hours, 15 minutes, and 35 seconds.

The above-mentioned situation is undoubtedly a good sign for filmmakers who are willing to bring some serious horror films. Considering that CBFC is trying to avoid issues with certain scenes and dialogues, it is also hinting towards a situation where controversies might emerge for certain reasons.

However, the controversies won’t matter much for CBFC as they have cleared films such as Kill and Marco last year without any cuts. While Marco was in the headlines for breaking the boundaries in terms of violence, and there were demands to ban the film, it did not happen.

Meanwhile, Maa’s runtime has hinted that there will be enough entertaining elements for the audience to keep them engaged until the end. But let’s wait and see if the story and screenplay is flawless and does not have any loopholes.

On the other hand, granting a U/A certificate to a horror film means that there might not be some strong horror. There is a possibility that certain scenes might lack intensity as per expectations and this can lead to a difference in public opinion.
