We are in for one of the most unexpected box office face-offs as we reach the weekend. Yes, we are talking about Kajol’s Maa and the Aamir Khan-Genelia D’souza starrer Sitaare Zameen Par.
Despite limited marketing expenses and minimal promotions, Maa, which was released a day ago has made an impressive Rs. 4.90 crore from just 1500 screens. Of course, it is nearly half of Sitaare Zameen Par’s opening, which was Rs. 10.50 crore.

Imagine how Maa would have performed if it was also released in 3250 screens like the Aamir Khan starrer!
The real stir, however, lies beyond the numbers. Industry insiders and fans are pointing fingers at alleged screen politics, with claims that Maa was sidelined in favour of Aamir’s film.

Social media has been ablaze, with #Maa trending for “not bowing down” to industry bias. The makers of Sitaare Zameen Par even rolled out a Buy 2 Get 1 free offer earlier. However, this was also interpreted by many as a desperate attempt to pull in footfalls.
In an age where content is said to speak louder than unwanted drama, Maa’s opening day success is being seen as a bold statement: real stories and authentic performances can still pierce through the noise, no matter how big the star on the other side.
