Sourav Ganguly Biopic Cast: Not Exciting Enough?

Rajkummar Rao in Sourav Ganguly Biopic

Rajkummar Rao has recently confirmed that he will be playing Sourav Ganguly in an upcoming biopic. The actor revealed the same during an interview, stating that he is nervous, but it is a huge responsibility, and it is going to be a lot of fun to play the character.

Notably, the famous cricket player has already announced Rajkummar’s involvement with the biopic before the latter confirmed it in an interview. The untitled film is scheduled to arrive in theatres in December 2026.

The filming process will begin in January next year, and detailed information about the director and other cast members playing key roles in the film is yet to be made official.

While Sourav Ganguly is not producing the film, he said that the person producing it is the right individual to take the responsibility. Sourav also mentioned that he would help the makers with anything they need to complete the film.

However, the biggest question right now is whether the new film will be able to pull audiences to the big screen. Although Sourav Ganguly has a huge fan base in India, audiences are tired of watching biopics, even if they feature a big star playing the lead.

A few years ago, Sajid Nadiadwala, Kabir Khan, and Ranveer Singh brought the story of Kapil Dev to the audience with 83.

Despite grossing more than Rs. 150 crores at the box office and receiving positive reviews, 83 turned out to be a flop. This is proof that even word-of-mouth cannot save a film nowadays.

While Rajkummar is a talented actor, his films take a big opening only if they have entertaining content. Last year, he gave a big blockbuster with Stree 2. But a few months later, his film Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video could not repeat the same success.

For now, no one can say with conviction that the film will be a hit or a flop. But since everything is finalized now, makers have to add entertaining elements such as comedy, emotions, and chartbuster songs if they want to make the biopic successful.
