Bollywood is going through an epidemic when it comes to celebrity stardom, and there’s a significant shift in how “heroes” are perceived on the silver screen.
In a recent interview, actor and comedian Vir Das pointed out how Bollywood actors would reach their peak stardom in their mid-thirties and gain a substantial loyal fanbase.
He explained that iconic actors like Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, and Hrithik Roshan were the last few celebrities to garner the kind of fame they did.
However, today, no one can pinpoint a single actor who has the potential to build a reputation as the “King of Bollywood.”
The new wave of Bollywood actors who’ve crossed the 30 threshold, like Ranveer Singh, Varun Dhawan, Ranbir Kapoor, Sidharth Malhotra, Ayushmann Khurrana, Tiger Shroff, and Kartik Aryan, are all well-known, but fans complain that none can be labelled as superstars.
Many modern films focus heavily on high-octane action and slow-motion shots, unlike the classic masala films known for their diverse blend of drama, romance, comedy, and music.
Relatable narratives like those of the common man have no space on the big screen. Fans complain that it’s the reason why the general public can no longer connect with cinema.
Trade analysts predict that Ranbir Kapoor, with his upcoming film Ramayana, might change this narrative, and following the success of Saiyaara, some also believe that Ahaan Panday has the charisma to become Bollywood’s next big superstar. However, it’s still too early to make any definitive predictions.
It’s been a long time since the audience has collectively appreciated the talent of an artist; it’s only fair that Bollywood hears these pleas and delivers a star who deserves it all.
