After a long two-year legal battle over the 1982 classic Disco Dancer, Subhash B has finally settled his dispute with Shemaroo Entertainment. The company had raised concerns about copyright infringement when Subhash proposed a sequel.
In 2011, Subhash signed an agreement with Shemaroo for limited video and satellite rights to Disco Dancer. However, he retained full creative control over the film. This ensured that he could decide the direction of any future projects.
On August 12, the Bombay High Court ruled in Subhash’s favour. He now has the green light to move forward with the sequel, confirming that the Intellectual Property Rights for the original film have always belonged to him.
With legal hurdles cleared, Subhash and co-producer Nitin Kumar Gupta are planning Disco Dancer 2. The sequel will continue the story with dance and music at its core, following the spirit of the original.
Mithun Chakraborty played Jimmy, a street singer who rises to fame in the original movie. The new film will have a similar storyline, focusing on talent, struggle, and the magic of music.
Subhash has expressed interest in casting either Ranbir Kapoor or Allu Arjun for the lead. He praised both for their acting skills as well as their dancing abilities, which are crucial for this role.
K. V. Vijayendra Prasad, known for Baahubali, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, and RRR, is expected to write the screenplay. His involvement adds credibility and excitement to the project.
Subhash may direct the film himself, but the final decision will depend on which actor signs on. He wants the lead to align perfectly with his vision for the sequel.
While many sequels recently have failed to match the originals, fans remain cautious. They hope Disco Dancer 2 can honor the legacy of the beloved classic.
The original music was composed by the late Bappi Lahiri, whose songs remain iconic. Fans are eager to see who can carry forward the musical heritage and do justice to the original soundtrack.
