Is Shankar Finished

Tamil director Shankar has rendered a great service to Indian film fans. By and large, he has delivered not just commercial hits that thrive on festival seasons or other external advantages but also a solid collection of more than half a dozen memorable films that will remain significant in South Indian cinema history.

However, until Game Changer or rather Indian 2 happened, many believed Shankar had lost his way after witnessing Rajamouli’s success with VFX-heavy films. That was when Shankar seemed to falter. But his true strength has always been political dramas.

Now, after Indian 3 and Game Changer, it is evident that director Shankar has completely lost his touch with political dramas as well.

So, neither VFX-driven spectacles nor political dramas appear to be his forte anymore. Does this mean he is finished?

Can he still deliver compelling films? Is this the end of Shankar’s prime, leading him to fade away like many other directors before him?

Shankar remains one of the few directors who have genuinely earned fans across multiple languages—not just in Tamil but also among Telugu audiences, who eagerly await his films and hope for a strong comeback. However, his recent work are outdated and his stories no longer resonate.

Unfortunately, his judgment is also in question. With Game Changer, he did not even rely on his own story but instead depended on Karthik Subbaraj’s script—and still failed.

This raises further doubts about his abilities, not just in writing compelling narratives but also in selecting good stories when borrowing from others.

Whether Shankar is finished or not is too early to say, but for all the outstanding work he has done, there remains a significant number of fans who genuinely wish for his comeback. To achieve that, he must work harder, stay updated, and return with a stronger story. Hopefully, he will.

However, Shankar’s biggest nightmare is Indian 3, which is in the pipeline. As a direct follow-up to Indian 2, a film already marred by massive trolls, Indian 3 could further damage his reputation. Given all that has happened, making a strong comeback right after Game Changer will be a monumental challenge for Shankar.
