Pushpa 2 The Rule

Allu Arjun’s ‘Pushpa 2: The Rule’ has experienced massive success at the Box Office, leading to talks about it everywhere on social media.

It seems that the film’s success has polarised social media users into two categories — the one that loves the film and the other that despises it.

Online critiques have labelled the film as a ‘new low for Indian cinema’, arguing that visual appeasement and masala application seem to be winning over quality storytelling.

This argument does not seem unanimous, as several have spoken against it in disagreement. One user argued that if the bar were this low, then every mass-attracting commercial film would have succeeded at the same level.

While it is true that quality narration and storytelling are being overlooked more now than ever before, it is also a fact that even the masses can’t be attracted in huge numbers without some worthy content.

With industries like Bollywood constantly losing their touch, disconnecting more and more from tier-2 and tier-3 cities, it becomes obvious that even attracting the masses is not everyone’s cup of tea.

At the same time, over-reliance on flashy visuals and formulaic elements can become a worrisome trend, significantly impacting narration quality.

Many on social media have picked their sides in one corner or the other. One user said, “It’s pure entertainment, and that’s what cinema is for.” Another criticised the lack of depth in the film, calling it ‘style over substance’.

This debate raises many questions for Indian filmmakers regarding the delicate balancing of mass appeal with meaningful storytelling so that neither comes at the cost of the other.
