SS Rajamouli has finally offered fans a deeper glimpse into the world of Varanasi, starring Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Prithviraj Sukumaran.
In an interview with the European magazine Tsounami, Rajamouli described the film as a globe-trotting adventure.
“We shot a video about what the audience will experience and what they can expect, without revealing the story. It travels from Varanasi to Antarctica, even Africa, and into the past, to Ancient Rome, before finally returning to Varanasi,” Rajamouli said.
However, that one phrase, “Ancient Rome,” has sparked widespread confusion across social media. The reason is simple.
Rajamouli has already revealed on multiple occasions that Varanasi features a 20-minute Ramayana episode. Because of that, many fans believe the interview contains a translation or transcription error and that he actually meant “Ancient Ramayana” rather than “Ancient Rome.”
Social media has been flooded with speculation since then.
One user joked, “What’s the connection between Ancient Rome and Varanasi?”
Another wrote, “There are no sequences in Varanasi set in Ancient Rome. It was probably a mistranslation by the foreign magazine. He must have been referring to the Ramayana portion.”
Others believe Rajamouli may have accidentally hinted at another massive surprise. Given Rajamouli’s reputation for blending mythology, history, and fantasy in unexpected ways, some believe an Ancient Rome connection cannot be completely ruled out.
Did Rajamouli accidentally reveal a shocking Ancient Rome connection, or did a simple translation error turn “Ramayana” into “Rome”? Only a clarification from Rajamouli, or the release of Varanasi in April 2027, will settle the mystery.
