Strong Warning to Ramayana Makers: 8 Oscars Won’t Save This!

Ramayana teaser VFX controversy

The recently released teaser for Namit Malhotra’s ambitious two-part epic Ramayana, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Yash, and Sai Pallavi, has sparked intense debates online. The grand project is now facing heavy trolling across social media platforms.

Several media voices and audience groups have criticised the Rs 4000 crore film. They argue that the adaptation appears to move away from the original story written by Valmiki, while leaning more towards Hollywood style visuals.

In a widely shared post on X, one reviewer questioned the creative choices. The user stated that if Ramayana is being made, the characters and narrative should remain true to Valmiki’s original version.

The reviewer also pointed out that the asuras resemble Hollywood style monsters. Additionally, the locations shown in the teaser appeared more foreign than rooted in Indian settings.

Many users warned that lack of authenticity could harm the film’s reception. They compared it to Adipurush, which faced criticism for trying to appeal to Western audiences and failed to meet expectations.

Some commentators suggested that the makers should reconsider their approach. They advised rebranding the film as inspired by the epic rather than presenting it as a faithful adaptation of Valmiki’s Ramayana.

Another user criticised the makers by saying that even multiple awards would not save the film if it fails to stay true to the original story. This reflects the strong emotional connection audiences have with the epic.

The backlash intensified soon after the teaser release, with many calling the VFX artificial. Despite the massive budget, several viewers felt that the visuals looked unrealistic and lacked depth.

The decision to release the teaser first in the USA also drew criticism. Many felt that the makers were prioritising global audiences over Indian viewers, which added to the ongoing debate.

The film’s ambitious scale, including music by Hans Zimmer and A.R. Rahman, along with IMAX plans, is now being questioned. There are concerns that such a grand vision might distance core audiences.

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Ramayana Part 1 starring Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi, Yash, and Sunny Deol is set for a Diwali 2026 release. The film is already emerging as one of the most debated adaptations of the epic.
