Maharaja Goes Hollywood, But Who Will Replace Vijay?

Vijay Sethupathi Maharaja Hollywood remake

Vijay Sethupathi’s Maharaja has now reached a stage that very few Tamil films manage. The 2024 crime thriller is officially heading for a Hollywood remake, and the project is being developed with an A-list Hollywood actor in mind. The bigger curiosity, however, is the name doing the rounds for the lead role.

Producer Sudhan Sundaram has confirmed that a Hollywood agency approached the makers for the remake rights after Maharaja received strong attention internationally, particularly following its successful run in China. He also revealed that the Hollywood version is likely to go on floors next year.

At the centre of the current buzz is Matthew McConaughey. His name has been circulating as a possible choice to take over the role played by Vijay Sethupathi. But this is where the makers have maintained caution. Sundaram said McConaughey could be among the stars being approached, while stressing that the Hollywood agency will have to officially confirm the casting.

That leaves the remake with a major unanswered question. Maharaja is not merely being dubbed or adapted for another Indian market. It is being developed as a Hollywood production, making the project a significant new chapter for the film and its director Nithilan Swaminathan. Now, all eyes are on the actor who will finally inherit Vijay Sethupathi’s role.
