An internal dispute among Andhra Pradesh employee-union leaders has taken a political turn, with Amaravati Revenue Employees JAC chairman Bhupatiraju Ravindra Raju accusing AP JAC Amaravati chairman Bopparaju Venkateswarlu of bringing political comments into the employee movement.
Ravindra Raju alleged that Bopparaju’s recent Vijayawada meeting went beyond employee issues. He objected to references involving Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and Nara Bhuvaneswari, and alleged that inappropriate and mocking comments were made about Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan while he was undergoing medical treatment.
These are Ravindra Raju’s allegations, and Bopparaju’s response is awaited.
Employee unions regularly raise issues such as DA, PRC, pensions and pending dues. Ravindra Raju’s objection is that such platforms should remain focused on employee concerns rather than political comments.
The political angle matters because government employees form a large and organised group. Their issues can have a wider political impact, especially when elections and government decisions are involved.
The Chandrababu government has been highlighting steps taken to clear employee dues and the decision to extend the Old Pension Scheme to around 11,000 CPS employees.
For the TDP and Jana Sena leadership, keeping the focus on governance and employee welfare also helps keep the issue separate from wider political disputes.
The Bhupatiraju-Bopparaju disagreement has therefore become more than an internal union matter.
Should employee union meetings remain focused on employee issues, or should political comments also have a place in them?
