Google’s announcement of a 1 Giga Watt AI Hub in Vishakhapatnam, with a $15 billion investment, has created a major buzz. The project marks a big win for IT Minister Nara Lokesh, who previously brought TCS, Accenture, and Cognizant to the city.
YSR Congress, however, appears confused about how to respond. Since Google is a global name, opposing it openly is difficult. Yet, the party’s social media teams continue to criticise the project instead of acknowledging its potential.
They claim that the new Data Center will cause power and water shortages. The state government has clarified that renewable energy and desalination projects are part of the plan, ensuring sustainability. Despite this, the Opposition remains adamant.
YSR Congress members also argue that Data Centers don’t create many jobs. Industry experts, however, know that Data Centers build long-term tech ecosystems that attract more investment and innovation rather than just offering direct employment.
Adding to the confusion, a section of the party credits YS Jagan Mohan Reddy for the project. Former MLA Abbayya Chowdary posted on X, quoting Sundar Pichai’s statement and claiming it reflected Jagan’s earlier vision for Vishakhapatnam.
His post read: “We @ysjagan always believed in Visakhapatnam’s potential and now the world agrees! Google and Adani $15B AI hub will put #Vizag on the global tech map. A big thanks to @gauram_adani and @sundarpichai for driving innovation & opportunity where it matters most!”
The statement drew attention for the wrong reasons. It exposed the insecurity within YSR Congress. Instead of forcing credit, Chowdary could have avoided the topic altogether. The party’s members seem unable to appreciate progress unless they can claim ownership.
If YSR Congress cannot acknowledge positive developments for Andhra Pradesh, it will struggle to convince voters that it genuinely cares about the state’s growth. Recognising success, regardless of who achieves it, is key to earning public trust.
