Google’s upcoming 1 Giga Watt AI Hub in Vishakhapatnam with an investment of 15 Billion Dollars has become one of the biggest tech developments in India this year.

Bringing Google to Vishakhapatnam within two years in power is being seen as a major achievement for IT Minister Nara Lokesh, who previously brought TCS and Cognizant to the Port City.

However, the Opposition YSR Congress Party has started criticizing the project, claiming that the AI Hub will increase power consumption and water usage in the state. They also argued that it will not create much employment.

It’s true that data centers require limited manpower because of automation. Once operational, they depend on a small, skilled workforce  mainly technicians, engineers, and IT professionals.

But to call them “useless” is misleading. The Google AI Hub places Vishakhapatnam directly on the Global IT Map. The value of such projects lies not in the direct jobs they create, but in the ecosystem they develop around them.

Data centers attract tech companies, startups, and industries that rely on high-speed computing, cloud services, and low-latency networks. Sectors like AI, machine learning, fintech, gaming, and e-commerce are likely to set up operations nearby  generating large-scale indirect employment.

These hubs also fuel growth in supporting sectors like power supply, cooling systems, construction, networking, and cybersecurity. As these industries expand, they bring new investments and jobs to the region.

Data centers further drive innovation by offering the computing power needed for research and development. AI startups and biotech firms working with large datasets can rely on these facilities for advanced processing, leading to new products and breakthroughs.

Moreover, such infrastructure demands strong power grids, high-speed internet, and better roads  all contributing to local development.

Google has also addressed the environmental concerns. The Vishakhapatnam AI Hub will run entirely on renewable energy, and desalination plants will be built to draw water from the Bay of Bengal, ensuring no strain on local resources.

In short, the Opposition’s concerns appear unfounded. The Google AI Hub is set to transform Vishakhapatnam into a global tech powerhouse, creating a ripple effect of growth across Andhra Pradesh.
