
There was a time when Mangalagiri was the hub of weaving with vibrant colours and lively weavers going about their jobs.
However, due to various reasons, 5 to 6000 looms have come down to just 1400 looms. Almost for the past 2 and half decades, weavers’ collectives along with Left parties have been asking the government to induce life into the dying community.

Now that Nara Lokesh has chosen Mangalagiri as his constituency, the future looks bright for Mangalagiri and its weavers.
The HRD minister has put his focus on his constituency and the Handloom Park which has been a dream of every weaver in Mangalagiri is about to come true.

A mega handloom park will soon be developed here. To kickstart the process, land belonging to Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple behind Autonagar in Mangalagiri has been identified.
The textiles & handlooms department has decided to allocate 10.80 acres under Survey No 16 for the mega park. A lease will be taken for 31 years from the temple.

Rs 25,000 will be paid per acre and the lease would be hiked every three years. The textiles & handlooms minister S Savitha visited the site with officials and expressed her satisfaction.
A weavers’ hub was started by Lokesh with his own money where the weavers were being trained to come up with new designs and export their work abroad. Happy with the results, Minister Lokesh has decided on the mega park.
The mega park will be on the lines of Kanchi Silk Park and it will provide opportunities for 5000 people directly and indirectly.
