Sankranti cock fights Andhra Pradesh

Andhra Pradesh is preparing for the 3-day Sankranti festival. Along with rangoli and sweets made from newly harvested rice, cock fights continue to attract widespread attention every year, despite legal and ethical debates surrounding them.

People from outside Andhra Pradesh visit to observe the cock fights, which are culturally known as a traditional event for some communities. Betting is also reported during the festival, linked by many to the festive spirit, although it remains illegal.

The knives used for cock fights are in high demand during this period. They are specially made from steel used in heavy vehicle bearing tyres, then polished six times. The process includes heating, shaping the tip, and dipping it in cold water. These knives cost around Rs 800 each and are specifically made for cock fights.

Specialists are hired to tie the knife to the leg of the bird. Many believe superstition plays a role, and if the specialist’s hand is considered “good”, the cock might win. These are cultural beliefs and not factual claims.

During the three days of Sankranti, these specialists reportedly charge between Rs 10000 and Rs 25000 per day. Their skill is seen as a crucial deciding factor in the contest by participants.

Authorities often issue warnings due to concerns over animal cruelty, safety risks, and illegal gambling. The event remains controversial, with cultural tradition and legal restrictions frequently clashing during the festival season.
