The TDP’s most inspiring choice in the 2024 elections was Miryala Sirisha Devi as its candidate from Rampachodavaram ST Constituency. An Anganwadi Teacher, her selection reflected the party’s stated commitment to empowering marginalised sections.
Sirisha Devi lost her job after local YSR Congress leaders allegedly discriminated against her because her husband belonged to the TDP. Despite this setback, she entered electoral politics and contested from a constituency long seen as a YSR Congress stronghold.
Rampachodavaram ST Constituency traditionally favoured YSR Congress due to ST and Christian voter support. Yet, Sirisha Devi won by a margin of 9,139 votes during the wave election, drawing praise for both her victory and the party’s decision.
However, recent developments suggest the journey is far from complete. YSR Congress MLC Anantha Babu made harsh remarks against the MLA and at one point called her “Pichhidana” during a public attack.
Sirisha Devi responded firmly, countering the allegations with facts and figures. She did not hold back and even referred to the MLC as “Pichhoda”, signalling that she would not stay silent in the face of insults.
Anantha Babu has a controversial past, including the killing of his driver and delivering the body to the victim’s family. He also issued what was seen as an indirect death threat, but Sirisha Devi continued to stand her ground.
Within the constituency, reports suggest a section of the TDP led by former MLA Nagulapalli Dhanalakshmi is working against her. This internal issue needs urgent attention from the party leadership.
The TDP High Command should actively promote leaders like Sirisha Devi. Elevating a strong woman leader from marginalised sections will earn goodwill and strengthen the party’s image at the grassroots.
The party can take lessons from how YSR Congress promoted Nandigam Suresh, though his rise later turned controversial. In contrast, leaders like Sirisha Devi can use such opportunities responsibly and grow into credible, long term leadership.
TDP must ensure its support does not stop halfway. Backing Sirisha Devi fully will show that the party’s commitment to social justice goes beyond election slogans.
