The Indian government has imposed an immediate ban on the export of non-basmati white rice to curb domestic prices and contain cereal inflation. This decision may affect global grain supplies, as India has been the world’s largest rice exporter, with non-basmati rice accounting for 80% of total exports.
India has been the world’s largest rice exporter since 2012, with shipments to over 100 countries, including the US.
Indian people, mainly the Telugu community, in the US cannot imagine living without eating Sona Masuri Rice, in particular. They line up regularly in grocery stores like Patel’s to buy the Indian brand of rice.
Taking advantage of the ban & demand, some desi stores have already increased the price by $8 on each 20 lbs bag.
The reports suggest that this ban may impact the supply and cost of rice in the US. It could send already elevated prices shooting even higher, and the USA would be hardest hit by the ban as the country is one of the top export destinations.
We don’t know how long this ban will continue. As long as grocery stores have stocked up in enough quantity, there shouldn’t be any immediate crisis.
However, if the ban continues for a long time, then the Telugu people might have to opt for Mexican brands of rice for some period, which are not as preferred as Sona Masuri Rice.
