What Is the Film About?
The Girlfriend is about Bhooma’s (Rashmika) love relationship with Vicky (Dheekshith Shetty), what leads to their breakup and her journey through a toxic relationship delivering a meaningful message.
Performances
Rashmika plays the character Bhoomi and delivers a neat performance. She gets a couple of key sequences and handles them well.
Deekshith Shetty who has equal importance and screen time, also delivers a decent performance.
Analysis
The Girlfriend is directed by Rahul Ravindran who previously directed films like Chi La Sow, and Manmadhudu 2. This time he attempts a relational drama set in a college backdrop. The film opens with a simple college setup and the first half takes over 45 minutes to reach the initial conflict between the boyfriend and girlfriend.
The biggest issue is that while the writing feels passable for much of the first half, both the lead characters and the female protagonist come across as one-dimensional lacking any surprising highs or lows in their relationship drama. The narrative progresses at a slow without significant emotional peaks or dips which makes it feel somewhat flat.
The pre-interval portion, however, picks up and becomes genuinely engaging, particularly when Rashmika meets Dheekshith Shetty’s mother and glimpses her future. This scene is conceived and presented very well adding a simple yet nice block to the first half.
Overall, the first half benefits from neat casting and a well-executed interval block, but the college drama itself doesn’t offer much happening. Several additional character -be it Anu Emmanuel, Rao Ramesh or the professor played by the director himself-come across more as fillers than meaningful contributors to the story in the first half.
The second half opens with the father discovering his daughter’s relationship. What follows is largely predictable, playing out exactly as one expects from the setup at the beginning of the film. While the second half does offer better drama in bits and pieces, it gradually leads to a meaningful, albeit predictable, climax.
It is surprising that a director like Rahul Ravindran, despite making a sincere attempt, handles crucial moments-like a key break-up scene-without any notable effort in writing or execution. The writing throughout the film barely scratches the surface. While it isn’t bad, there are very few well-crafted dialogues across the entire narrative.
The supporting cast is also underutilized. Characters played by actors like Rao Ramesh, as well as a few others portrayed by the director himself, fail to add any significant value to the film’s emotional core.
Overall, The Girlfriend is a film for which it’s important to set the right expectations. It is a sincere attempt by the team, but it remains surface-level in terms of breaking new ground or evoking strong emotions. It is not a film that will work for everyone.
Performances by Others Actors
The Girlfriend features very few supporting characters, including the director himself. Rahul Ravindran’s role which had the potential to be a meaningful thread in the film ends up being just a passable presence. Rao Ramesh plays the heroine’s father but he appears in only a few scenes and delivers his usual performance. Apart from these two senior actor Roshni appears in a single scene and performs well.
Music and Other Departments?
The Girlfriend benefits greatly from Prashanth Vihari, who delivered the background score that perfectly suits this kind of relationship drama. The songs, composed by Hesham Abdul Wahab are mostly just okay.
Cinematography by Krishnan Vasanth is adequate capturing the film’s simple tone effectively. Production values by Geeta Arts and Dheeraj Mogilineni Entertainment meet the needs of a relationship drama like The Girlfriend.
Highlights?
Sincere attempt at exploring the girl’s side of a toxic relationship.
Neat performances by both leads.
BGM (by Prashanth vihari)
Meaningful message at the end.
Drawbacks?
Predictable from start to finish
Passable writing
Drama only scratches the surface
Overall a routine narrative
Did I Enjoy It?
Not much, though the intention and a few scenes stood out
Will You Recommend It?
Not for everyone.
