Property tax often becomes a long-standing burden for urban homeowners, turning a routine civic responsibility into a financial strain. Rising assessments and delayed payments add pressure, especially in large cities where arrears continue to grow each year.
Governments across India regularly explore relief measures to balance revenue collection with taxpayer support. These initiatives aim to recover dues while offering limited concessions that encourage defaulters to clear pending amounts without prolonged legal or financial stress.
In Hyderabad, the Telangana government has introduced a fresh relief window for property owners with outstanding dues. The move aligns with earlier efforts and reflects a practical approach to address mounting arrears within the city limits.
The One-Time Scheme (OTS) for FY 2025–26 applies to property tax defaulters under the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). Under this scheme, property owners must pay the full principal amount along with only 10% of the accumulated interest.
The remaining 90% of the interest component is waived, providing significant relief on long-pending dues. The scheme covers both private and government properties, helping address arrears that have accumulated over several years across Hyderabad.
Payments can be made through the MyGHMC app, MeeSeva centres, GHMC citizen service centres, or the official GHMC portal. Multiple payment options ensure ease of access and reduce barriers for residents seeking to regularise their tax records.
A similar scheme was rolled out during 2024–25, indicating a recurring strategy to improve collections. GHMC expects to raise nearly Rs 500 to 600 crore through the current initiative, strengthening municipal finances in the process.
While the relief is welcome, the scheme also highlights concerns around increasing property tax demands amid inflation. It promotes compliance without cancelling obligations, offering a balanced push towards improved civic revenue and service delivery.
