Goa Health Minister Suspends Doctor

A storm has erupted in Goa after Health Minister Vishwajit Rane publicly berated and ordered the suspension of Dr Rudresh Kurtikar, Chief Medical Officer at Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), during a surprise visit.

A viral video shows Rane scolding the doctor over a patient care issue and directing his immediate suspension in front of cameras and staff.

The patient in question had visited the hospital demanding an emergency injection of Vitamin B12, which is not considered a medical emergency.

The doctor allegedly referred the patient to a nearby Community Health Centre. However, reports suggest the patient was related to a journalist with direct access to Rane, raising questions about the nature of the complaint.

In the video, Rane is heard saying, “Remove your mask when I’m talking. Don’t force me to act.” He further threatened suspension without hearing the doctor’s explanation.

Facing criticism, Rane later admitted his tone could have been better, but stood by his decision to “stand up for a patient.” However, critics argue this was not a case of public healthcare negligence but political muscle-flexing disguised as activism.

Many pointed out that had such behavior come from a non-BJP state, the reactions would have been far more severe.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has since stepped in, announcing that Dr Kurtikar would not be suspended. He emphasized the government’s commitment to healthcare and praised the tireless service of medical professionals.
