Cricket Australia has hinted at the possibility of hosting IPL matches or an India bilateral match in Australia in the future.
While nothing has been officially planned, the board has confirmed that it has not ruled out the idea.
The discussion began after Cricket Australia announced that the opening match of the 2026-27 Big Bash League season will be played in Chennai.
It will be the first official BBL match to be held outside Australia, marking a major step in the growing partnership between Australian and Indian cricket.
When asked whether Australia could also host an IPL match in return, Cricket Australia said it recognises India’s massive influence on world cricket and remains open to such opportunities in the future.
Despite the board also made it clear that there is no official proposal or confirmed plan at the moment.
At the same time, Cricket Australia rejected reports suggesting the 150th anniversary Ashes Test could be be played in India.
The board clarified that the idea came up during a podcast discussion and that there are no plans to move the historic match outside Australia or England.
Former England captain Michael Atherton also opposed the proposal, saying the Ashes should remain an England Australia rivalry and should not be shifted for commercial reasons.
Although an IPL match in Australia remains only a possibility, Cricket Australia’s latest comments have sparked fresh discussion about whether the world’s biggest T20 league could eventually expand beyond India.
