Gone are the days when we used to care about the caste system. We Indians have moved on from that, and now, all we seem to care about is the class system. Yes, many recent anecdotes have surfaced, revealing a new kind of untouchability where people can’t share a lift with someone from a relatively poor background.
A recent incident in an apartment in Hyderabad highlights this issue, where a warning sign has been posted explicitly stating that housemaids, delivery boys, and workers should not use the passenger lift. If caught doing so, they will be fined Rs. 1000.
This clearly indicates that our society has progressed in some ways, as we no longer seem to care about a person’s caste or race. Instead, our focus has shifted to their economic status. If someone arrives in a lavish car, they must be respected. However, if it’s a delivery person, the attitude seems to be “Take the stairs!” This warning has gone viral on various social media sites, with people reacting strongly against it.
If this trend continues, we are not very far from a society where there will be separate schools, hospitals, and food courts for different classes of people.
Regrettably, this apartment is not an isolated case. There are numerous buildings where rules differ for maids and workers. It has been observed that these high-class individuals harbor a peculiar discriminatory mentality, a phenomenon predominantly witnessed in India. Rarely do we find a person receiving different treatment solely because of their economic status elsewhere.
