The season begins with the entry of muddy waters into river Godavari. Those in business, have paid huge advances for early stock. In Yanam, 1 kg fish was sold for Rs 18,000.

However, the officials are concerned as over fishing has reduced the availability of the much sought-after fish, as it is harming mother fish.

Pulasa or hilsa is liked for its distinct taste, aroma and texture. Pulasa is available between July and September. It’s taste is attributed to the waters of Godavari and it’s rich diet.

The cost can vary between Rs 7000 per kilo to Rs 20,000 per kilo. There is a saying in Andhra – pulstelu ammaina pulasa tinochu, which means you can sell your mangalasutra to eat pulasa.

The sea water fish moves to estuaries during monsoon season and the taste changes when it moves from salty waters to fresh water. The fish dies after the breeding season. So they must be caught at the right time, making the fish costly.
