Hyderabad’s Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar has issued a serious warning about a growing cybercrime trend involving fake dating apps and misleading social media ads. He shared a video on X (Twitter) to alert people, especially young individuals, about how these scams are targeting those who may be feeling lonely or vulnerable.
According to the police, these scams usually start with attractive online advertisements. They promise easy connections with women for casual chats and claim that appearance or background does not matter. But in reality, these are not genuine services. They are carefully planned traps designed by cybercriminals to lure users.
Officials say fraudsters are now using advanced tools like Artificial Intelligence to create very realistic-looking videos of women. These videos may seem completely real, but they are fake and created only to gain trust. Once someone clicks on such ads and installs the app, it can secretly access personal data on their phone, including contacts, photos, and other private information.
The scam becomes more dangerous during late-night video calls. Victims are shown explicit content while their own face is recorded without their knowledge. The criminals then edit or morph the video and threaten to send it to the victim’s contacts. This type of blackmail, known as sextortion, forces people to send money out of fear and embarrassment.
Police warn that paying money does not solve the problem and can lead to even bigger financial losses. Victims risk losing large amounts of money, sometimes even their entire savings. Authorities also said strict action will be taken against those who promote such fake ads on platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook.
The police are advising people to stay alert and avoid downloading apps from unknown links or advertisements. They stress that real relationships do not come from random online ads, and such offers often hide serious risks.
If someone becomes a victim, officials say they should not panic or feel ashamed. Instead, they should immediately call the national cybercrime helpline or report the issue through the official cybercrime reporting portal. According to authorities, awareness and quick action are the best ways to stay safe from such online scams.
