Social media is increasingly becoming a black hole for an entire generation, as it has significantly shortened the attention spans of the youth. The upcoming generation is also falling victim to this trend, causing parents to express concerns about their children.
A survey was conducted, and the organization has just published the results. According to the report, a substantial 73 percent of surveyed parents in urban India believe that data protection laws should mandate parental consent for children under 18 before they can access social media, OTT/video, and online gaming platforms.
The survey encompassed a diverse group of people and collected input from over 46,000 urban Indian parents residing in 296 different districts. Among the respondents, approximately 62 percent were men, and 38 percent were women. Nearly 47 percent of participants came from tier 1 areas, 35 percent from tier 2, and 18 percent from tier 3 and 4 districts.
Increasingly, children are developing a gadget addiction from a very young age, which has replaced traditional lullabies and the time they spend with their parents. One potential reason for this trend is the busy lifestyle of parents. In the midst of all these factors, children are becoming more and more addicted to social media, OTT, and online gaming platforms.
The report also suggests that platforms will need to implement additional safeguards to detect when a minor is registering an account and ensure that proper procedures are in place for parental consent.
