In a distressing turn of events, 16-year-old Pranshu, a vibrant queer artist from Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, fell victim to the insidious world of online bullying, with a disturbing twist that has brought the failures of social media platforms into sharp focus. The “mass” symbolised as the overwhelming wave of trolls who, through hate comments, played a role in Pranshu’s untimely demise.

Despite amassing a following of more than 16,500 on their ‘glamitupwithpranshu’ handle, the artist became the target of relentless online hate, raising serious questions about the efficacy of Instagram’s content moderation.

The incident not only brings attention to the urgent issue of cyberbullying, particularly against LGBTQIA+ individuals but also underscores the inadequacy of platforms like Instagram, owned by Meta, in safeguarding users from online harassment.

The hashtag #JusticeForPranshu, an outcry for accountability, faced obstacles on social media platforms, allegedly having posts removed for violating community guidelines. This development adds a layer of complexity to the pursuit of justice in the virtual sphere, exposing the challenges in navigating content moderation policies and the inherent limitations of such systems.

Pranshu’s story serves as a stark reminder that the consequences of online hate can be devastatingly real.

As society grapples with the impact of virtual interactions on mental health, it becomes imperative for social media platforms to reassess and fortify their measures to ensure the safety and well-being of users, especially those from marginalized communities who often bear the brunt of online discrimination.
