India’s unexpected T20I series defeat to Ireland has raised fresh concerns about the batting unit. The losses have also reignited the debate over whether Indian batters struggle in overseas conditions. Former spinner Ravichandran Ashwin believes there is a key reason behind the disappointing performances.
India failed to chase 183 in the opening T20I. The team then suffered a one-run defeat while chasing 155 in the second match. Several batters were unable to make significant contributions, leading to a disappointing series result.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin blamed the batting-friendly pitches used during the IPL. He said the “24-carat batting pitches” are completely different from the sporting surfaces in Ireland, where bowlers receive greater assistance throughout the match.
Ashwin believes players coming directly from the IPL often struggle to adapt to such challenging conditions. According to him, the drastic difference in pitch behaviour makes it difficult for batters to adjust quickly and perform consistently.
His comments have also sparked a wider discussion about the BCCI‘s selection policy. Many believe the board should evaluate performances in varied conditions instead of relying heavily on IPL form while selecting India’s T20I squad.
Captain Shreyas Iyer admitted that Ireland adapted better to the conditions. He praised the hosts for their disciplined bowling and sharp fielding. He also said India’s batters failed to read the pitch properly and missed opportunities by not converting singles into twos.
India will now head into the England series with several questions to answer. The upcoming matches will reveal whether the batting unit can bounce back or if the Ireland defeat has exposed a deeper concern that the BCCI must address.
