Mohammed Shami‘s absence from India’s Test squad for the Sri Lanka series has once again raised questions about his future.
Despite making a strong comeback in domestic cricket, the veteran pacer continues to be ignored by the selectors.
After returning from injury, Shami did everything expected of him. He played domestic cricket, bowled long spells and picked up 37 wickets in the Ranji Trophy.
The experienced pacer also made it clear that he was fully fit and ready for international cricket.
According to reports, the selectors have already identified a group of 15 young fast bowlers across formats who will lead India‘s pace attack in the coming years. Shami is reportedly not part of those long term plans.
The report adds that the selectors are already looking ahead to the next World Test Championship cycle. Instead of depending on senior pacers, the focus is now on giving young bowlers regular opportunities and preparing them for the future.
Jasprit Bumrah will continue to lead India’s pace attack, but his workload is expected to be managed carefully.
That means Mohammed Siraj and the new generation of fast bowlers will have to take more responsibility in the coming years.
Shami’s experience could still have helped India during this transition. But if the report is true, the selectors have already made their decision.
