RO-KO Demand? NZ Requesting BCCI For More ODIs

NZ request BCCI more ODIs

New Zealand Cricket has reportedly asked the Board of Control for Cricket in India to increase the number of ODI matches during India’s upcoming tour of New Zealand.

The tour is currently scheduled to feature two Tests, three ODIs and five T20Is. However, the hosts are interested in adding more 50 over matches to the itinerary.

According to reports, New Zealand Cricket has suggested expanding the ODI series from three games to five. The proposal is mainly driven by fan interest and commercial potential.

A major factor behind the request is the continued popularity of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Both players are currently focusing only on ODI cricket for the national team.

Their presence often attracts large crowds, especially during overseas tours. Because of this, New Zealand Cricket believes two additional ODI matches could improve ticket sales and broadcast revenue.

A report on March 3 stated that the proposal has already been sent to the BCCI. Discussions between the two cricket boards are still ongoing.

The final decision will depend on scheduling and logistical considerations. If both boards agree, the updated tour schedule could be announced soon.

India are expected to tour New Zealand in October this year. It will be the team’s first visit to the country in almost four years.

The previous tour took place in November 2022. That series was affected by rain, with India winning the T20I series 1-0 while New Zealand secured the ODI series 1-0.

This tour will also be India’s first full multi format visit to New Zealand since 2020. During that tour, India dominated the T20I series with a 5-0 victory.

However, New Zealand performed strongly in the other formats. The hosts won the Test series 2-0 and the ODI series 3-0.

According to the current Future Tours Programme, the 2026 tour includes two Tests, five T20Is and three ODIs. The number of ODI matches could increase if the BCCI approves the request.

The two Tests will also be important because they are part of the 2025-27 ICC World Test Championship cycle.

Before travelling to New Zealand, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are expected to feature in India’s home ODI series against Afghanistan, England and West Indies. These matches will help the team prepare for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
