Sanju Samson has finally addressed the speculation around losing his opening slot in India’s T20 team to Shubman Gill. The Rajasthan Royals captain broke his silence during the India vs Australia T20I series after a rain delay halted play.
Losing the Opening Role
In early 2024, when Gautam Gambhir and Suryakumar Yadav took charge of India’s T20 setup, Samson was promoted to open the innings. The move paid off handsomely as he smashed three centuries in a single year, cementing his reputation as a power hitter.
Gill Returns, Samson Shifts
However, with Gill’s return during the Asia Cup 2025, team management reinstated him as India’s primary opener alongside Abhishek Sharma. Samson remains part of the squad but now finds himself pushed to the middle order, a fresh challenge for the Kerala batsman.
Samson’s Calm Response
Speaking to broadcasters before the match was interrupted by rain, Samson said, “Honestly, I’ve played many roles for different teams over the years. I’ve opened, finished games, and now I’m batting in the middle order. The openers are settled, but the rest of us must stay ready for any position and situation.”
Strong Comeback in Asia Cup
Earlier this year, Samson struggled on Dubai’s slower pitches but bounced back with a brilliant innings against Pakistan during the high-pressure Asia Cup. That knock reminded fans why he remains one of India’s most versatile T20 players.
New Role Ahead of T20 World Cup
As India continues to shape its T20 batting order, fans are eager to see how Samson adapts as a finisher. With the T20 World Cup approaching, his ability to perform under pressure could become crucial for India’s campaign.
