Dhanush Slams AI-Edited Raanjhanaa Ending: ‘Disturbing’ Change Sparks Debate on Cinema’s Future
Raanjhanaa is remembered for its heartbreaking ending, where Dhanush’s character Kundan dies, leaving audiences deeply moved. However, that emotional closure was disrupted when an AI-generated “happy ending” was unveiled in the Tamil version, Ambikapathy, re-released on August 1, 2025.
The altered climax kept Kundan alive, replacing the original tragedy with a digitally fabricated outcome. The AI work was so convincing that many viewers initially didn’t realize it had been artificially created.
The change was made without the knowledge or consent of the film’s director Aanand L. Rai, who openly criticized Eros International for tampering with the story.
Dhanush, the lead actor, also took to social media to voice his outrage, calling the edit “deeply disturbing” and a betrayal of the film’s artistic integrity.
“The use of AI to alter films is a dangerous precedent for art and artists. It undermines the soul of storytelling and the legacy of cinema,” Dhanush wrote, urging for stricter regulations to prevent such practices.
His statement resonated widely, with fans and industry peers applauding him for defending cinematic authenticity. Many believe the incident reflects a growing trend where profit-driven motives override respect for original creative work.
This controversy has reignited discussions about AI’s role in the arts. While technology can be a powerful tool, unregulated use in storytelling risks stripping cinema of its emotional core.
As Dhanush put it, “For the love of cinema,” there must be ethical boundaries—before the humanity in our stories is replaced by soulless algorithms.
