Several leading airlines in India, including IndiGo, Air India, and SpiceJet, have raised concerns about the Directorate General of Civil Aviation’s revised Flight Duty Time Limitations framework. Airline bodies say the proposal appears more restrictive than global standards.
Through the Federation of Indian Airlines, carriers submitted a joint representation on the issue. They argued that the proposed Civil Aviation Requirements introduce tighter duty and rest provisions that could reduce operational flexibility.
Airlines believe fatigue management should follow globally harmonized and evidence based practices. According to them, the focus should remain on duty periods and proper rest rather than cumulative limits or rigid restrictions.
They also said international aviation frameworks give importance to rest quality and circadian alignment. The airline bodies feel the proposed rules may not fully consider operational challenges across different routes and schedules.
The revised Flight Duty Time Limitations norms aim to improve aviation safety by reducing crew fatigue. The framework proposes stricter limits on duty hours, night shifts, and mandatory rest periods.
Airlines, however, believe stricter regulations could affect operations and increase crew requirements. They say balancing safety and operational efficiency is important for long term sustainability.
Regulators have emphasised the need for stronger fatigue management systems to protect pilot wellbeing. The discussion highlights the need to maintain safety standards while addressing industry concerns.
While operational challenges remain a point of debate, ensuring crew rest and aviation safety continues to be the primary objective. The final decision on the revised framework will be closely watched by the aviation sector.
