On December 29, 2024, a Jeju Air flight crashed at Muan International Airport. The accident claimed the lives of 175 passengers and four crew members, making it the deadliest aviation disaster in the country’s history.

Just days before that, on December 25, 2024, Azerbaijan Airlines flight J2-8243 crashed in Kazakhstan. The incident resulted in 38 deaths, and reports later suggested a possible accidental ground fire, though this has not been officially confirmed.

Another serious accident took place on January 2, 2024, at Haneda Airport in Tokyo. A Japan Airlines aircraft collided with a Coast Guard plane, leading to five fatalities and highlighting risks even at highly advanced airports.
