Paramjit Singh, a long-time resident of Fort Wayne, Indiana, was taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) upon returning to the U.S. Shockingly, the reason cited was an old incident involving the unpaid use of a pay phone.

Medical Emergency Ignored in Custody

Singh, who suffers from a brain tumour and heart issues, was held at the airport for five days before being rushed to the emergency room. His health deteriorated in custody, but his family was never informed until they received the hospital bill.

Family in Distress, Struggling to Get Help

Singh’s family is now desperately trying to secure his release. His brother Charanjit said they are lost and unsure who to turn to for help. The experience has left the entire family traumatised and fearful of what lies ahead.

Green Card Status Offers No Safety

This case highlights a growing concern among permanent residents. Despite years of lawful residence, even minor infractions can lead to detention. Legal permanent residency is no longer seen as a secure status in today’s immigration climate.

Long-Term Immigrants Treated as Outsiders

Paramjit Singh’s story reflects a painful truth. Even after decades of living, working, and contributing to the country, immigrants can still be treated as outsiders—vulnerable to sudden detention or deportation over minor issues.
