H1B Rejected at Airport

A medical student traveling to the US seriously jeopardized their career due to a reckless mistake.

Taking to social media they shared how the authorities detained the visiting student at the Chicago O’hare airport for bringing prohibited food. As a result, their B1/B2 visa was rejected, and they were denied entry into the country.

However, this seems highly unusual as the food items are often confiscated and at worst, the person is let go after hours of detention. This led many fellow netizens to believe the student was hiding some information or misrepresenting the facts.

People speculated that the “prohibited food” could be drugs and that the traveling student was just lying. As the student was on a B1/B2 visitor visa but planned to do clinical rotations, a step toward applying for residency, some users even claimed visa fraud as they potentially lied about their reason for visiting the US.

As Trump’s strict crackdown on immigration is underway, this could potentially also be a drastic step to avoid letting more immigrants into the country. Even minor errors can now result in deportation and future visa troubles.

Whatever the real reason, this case has put a black mark on the student’s record, which could put their future US career under threat. Applying for H1B is already difficult in these uncertain times, so one should avoid giving the officials any excuse to reject your visa.
