ICE Arrests Indian Driver Again After Newlywed Crash

ICE arrest Oregon crash case

The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement has arrested an Indian origin truck driver accused of causing the death of two newlyweds. The arrest comes after local authorities released him despite a federal detainer.

The accused, Rajinder Kumar, was involved in an accident on US Highway 20 in Deschutes County on November 22 last year. His semi truck reportedly jackknifed, leading to a fatal crash involving newlyweds William Micah Carter and Jennifer Lynn Lower.

The couple died on the spot, just 16 days after their marriage. The incident shocked many and gained further attention due to the circumstances surrounding the accused and the legal developments that followed.

According to reports, Kumar pleaded not guilty in March to charges including manslaughter and reckless endangerment. It was also reported that he had entered the United States illegally in 2022, adding another layer to the case.

The controversy intensified when he was released from jail on April 2 despite an ICE detainer. This decision drew criticism, especially after the Department of Homeland Security shared details of the case on its official X account.

Following this, ICE officials tracked Kumar and arrested him again on April 22. He is currently being held at a processing centre in Washington and may face deportation proceedings in the coming days.

Authorities have criticised Oregon’s sanctuary policies, stating that ignoring federal detainers could impact public safety. The case has now sparked wider debate on immigration enforcement and related policies in the United States.

The incident has also led to strong reactions on social media. Discussions continue around legal accountability, immigration rules, and the broader implications of such cases.
