Professor Assaulted By Police

Caroline Fohlin, an economics professor at Emory University, was handcuffed and pinned by police during a pro-Palestine demonstration. The event happened early on Thursday in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.

Police have been accused of “brutality” by students, and the college and local police have come under fire from the Council on American-Islamic Relations for employing “excessive force.” There have been at least 28 arrests on campus, which emphasises the continued hostilities between the institution and Israel-Hamas.

Demonstrators at Emory University are calling for the closure of Cop City, a proposed police training facility in the South River Forest close to Atlanta, and a divestment from “Israeli apartheid”. Using tear gas and rubber bullets, the Emory police employed more forceful measures than those seen in protests of a similar nature in New York City and Los Angeles.

In a hectic day for the Top 50 school, twenty students and faculty members were among the 28 people who were arrested. Students are calling on colleges to cut off their ties to Israeli firms in response to the Hamas strikes on October 7, which have resulted in a war effort that has killed 34,000 Palestinians. Similar rallies are taking place around the United States. Last week, protests started at Columbia University and have since spread.
