During the pandemic, web series enjoyed a golden phase in India. Shows like The Family Man, Mirzapur and Scam 1992 became cultural phenomena, with audiences staying awake until midnight to binge-watch new episodes the moment they dropped.
For a while, web series became as exciting as theatrical releases.
However, the craze gradually slowed down. As more makers started producing similar crime dramas and thrillers, audiences began experiencing content fatigue. Viewership dipped, and the excitement around new releases wasn’t the same anymore.
Now, Telugu web series are hoping to change that, and July 3 could become an important day for the regional OTT space with four Telugu originals releasing across different platforms.
The biggest attraction is undoubtedly Super Subbu, starring Sundeep Kishan. Streaming on Netflix, it marks the platform’s first Telugu original web series featuring a popular Tollywood hero. The trailer suggests an entertaining take on a sensitive social issue, and Sundeep Kishan has been actively promoting the show.
Amazon Prime Video will premiere Isakapatnam, starring Samuthirakani and Aishwarya Rajesh. Set against the backdrop of politics, the mafia and coastal conflicts, the series promises an intense political drama driven by strong performances.
Another interesting release is Veerabhadruni Rahasyam on ZEE5. Inspired by the classic television series Marmadesam, it blends mystery, folklore and supernatural elements, targeting audiences who enjoy suspense dramas.
Completing the lineup is Gurtukostunnayi, starring Baby fame Viraj Ashwin. Premiering on ETV Win, the series is a nostalgic drama exploring memories, relationships and emotions, offering a refreshing alternative to action-heavy OTT content.
The timing is particularly interesting.
While theatres will be screening films like YRF’s Alpha, Nagabandham and Rao Bahadur, OTT viewers will also have multiple fresh options. It is rare to see four Telugu originals arriving on the same day across different platforms.
However, today’s OTT audience is far more selective than during the pandemic. Strong content, positive word of mouth and social media buzz matter much more than star value alone.
The encouraging sign is that all four series belong to different genres, offering viewers genuine variety instead of repeating the same formula.
Whether this marks the beginning of another OTT boom for Telugu originals will become clear over the next week.
