Netflix has confirmed that Stranger Things The First Shadow is being adapted for a global audience with a filmed version now in production. The streaming platform is recording the Broadway stage play with its original cast, expanding the franchise beyond television.
Although no release date has been announced, the move transforms the play from a theatre exclusive into a key chapter of the Stranger Things universe. The filmed version is expected to add new depth to the overall storyline and franchise timeline.
Set in 1959, The First Shadow focuses on the teenage years of Henry Creel, long before he becomes Vecna. The narrative explores the origins of his psychokinetic powers and adds fresh context to the mythology of the Upside Down.
The story also introduces younger versions of Jim Hopper and Joyce Maldonado, later known as Joyce Byers. Their lives intersect with Henry’s during high school in ways that later shape events seen in the main series.
The play was co written by Stranger Things writer Kate Trefrey along with creators Matt and Ross Duffer and playwright Jack Thorne. This collaboration ensures strong continuity with the original show and its established lore.
According to IGN, the production offers a missing piece connected to the series finale. Fans who felt unanswered questions remained after the show ended may find crucial explanations within this prequel.
The filmed release highlights Netflix’s broader plans for the franchise. With a live action spin off and the animated Stranger Things 85 also in development, The First Shadow acts as a crucial link between the past and future of the series.
