Aamir Khan has raised concerns about the current state of Bollywood. In a recent viral video, he criticised the growing dominance of action and horror films, saying this trend is harming creativity in cinema.
He explained that these genres have become so popular that filmmakers with different stories often struggle to get funding. Khan revealed that he was also approached for an action project but declined, stressing that restricting actors to just action or horror damages filmmaking as an art.
Reflecting on cinema’s legacy, he mentioned pioneers like V. Shantaram, Satyajit Ray, Bimal Roy, and Raj Kapoor. According to him, their contributions shaped Indian cinema, and their vision should not be overshadowed by the pursuit of box office numbers.
Khan questioned whether today’s industry could justify itself to such legends. He argued that if films like Basu Chatterjee’s Chhoti Si Baat or Chalte Chalte were released now, they would struggle to survive despite their brilliance.
He added that producers are conditioning audiences to expect only large-scale films. As a result, smaller, meaningful films get overlooked, with viewers assuming they can later stream them on OTT platforms.
Khan believes this trend is reshaping both the industry and viewing habits. He urged audiences to demand more variety from producers. Otherwise, not just cinema but the true experience of watching films will fade away.
