Sequel to One of VD’s Best Films: Why No Progress?

Badlapur 2 update Varun Dhawan

Badlapur remains one of the most defining films in Varun Dhawan’s career. Directed by Sriram Raghavan, the 2015 thriller earned cult status for its gritty tone. The film stood out for its moral complexity and a side of Varun that audiences had not seen earlier.

Any mention of Badlapur 2 naturally creates strong buzz. However, the latest update suggests the sequel is still far from being finalised. Progress remains slow despite continued interest around the project.

At the trailer preview of his upcoming film Ikkis, Sriram Raghavan spoke about the sequel. He confirmed that Badlapur 2 is still in development. He also revealed that two earlier story versions left him creatively unsatisfied.

Instead of pushing forward, Raghavan decided to pause the project. The decision reflects his intent to protect the impact of the original film. He chose not to compromise quality for commercial reasons.

Discussions around Badlapur 2 eventually led Raghavan and producer Dinesh Vijan to shift focus. Their attention moved fully to Ikkis, a war drama. The project took priority over the long-discussed sequel.

With Ikkis now complete, the director plans to revisit the sequel after its release. At present, two broad ideas exist. One continues directly from Badlapur, while the other explores similar themes in a new narrative.

The update keeps expectations alive but also highlights uncertainty. There is no confirmed script, storyline, or timeline yet. Given the lasting impact of Badlapur, caution appears necessary.

A sequel without strong conviction could harm the legacy of the original film. Badlapur still holds a strong place in Varun Dhawan’s filmography. For now, Badlapur 2 remains a possibility rather than a promise.
