The current month has witnessed multiple film releases competing for audience attention. This weekend, four new Hindi films arrived in theatres. Surprisingly, Vikram Bhatt’s Haunted: The Echoes of the Past has managed to attract audiences despite receiving largely negative reviews and criticism over its visual effects.
The unexpected response has reportedly led to increased demand for additional shows. Initially, several national cinema chains were hesitant to allocate screens to the film. However, stronger occupancy levels compared to competing releases prompted exhibitors to expand its show count.
Reports suggest that some screenings have already sold out, while evening shows continue to witness strong bookings. Industry insiders indicate that the film’s all-India show count has increased from approximately 3,000 to 4,500. The screen count has also expanded to around 1,500, with further changes possible over the weekend.
At the box office, Haunted: The Echoes of the Past reportedly opened with collections of around Rs. 2 crore. The film has performed better than Main Vaapas Aaunga and Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata. Trade analysts expect the film to maintain momentum if audience interest continues over the coming days.
Industry observers believe Vikram Bhatt’s association with the horror genre remains a significant advantage. Although some feel he no longer delivers films like Raaz or Shaapit, his name continues to hold value among horror enthusiasts. The genre itself enjoys a dedicated audience base across India.
Trade experts also point out that horror remains one of the safer genres when produced within controlled budgets. They believe that recent interest in horror films, including Hollywood releases such as Obsession and Passenger, may have contributed to the favourable response. Smaller centres are also considered important markets for horror films.
Additionally, the franchise factor appears to have benefited Haunted: The Echoes of the Past. Familiarity with the brand may have encouraged audiences to give the film a chance despite mixed reviews from critics.
The film’s long-term box office performance remains uncertain. Reports indicate that it was produced on a budget of approximately Rs. 10 to 15 crore. Given its current performance trend, recovering the investment may not prove to be particularly difficult.
