Just when you thought the Maddock Horror-Comedy Universe had revealed all its secrets, another surprising detail has surfaced. Director Aditya Sarpotdar recently shared that Munjya was originally written as a lesbian love story before it was changed into the film audiences saw.
He revealed on a podcast that writer Yogesh Chandekar’s first version featured a female lead in love with her best friend. The story followed a lonely girl who found comfort in her grandmother, the only person who truly understood her.
In that draft, the Munjya spirit was meant to appear when the girl tried to protect her best friend. Aditya said that the team had even considered casting Alia Bhatt and Shraddha Kapoor for the lead roles before he joined the project.
Once Aditya came on board, he felt the tone didn’t fit Munjya’s intended direction. He thought a story about a young boy in love would work better and create stronger emotional parallels. The makers agreed, and Abhay Verma was later cast as Bittu.
However, when fans heard about this change, many were disappointed. They felt the original version would have offered something bold and fresh a chance for Bollywood to represent same-gender love in a mainstream film.
Several fans argued that the director underestimated audiences, who are ready for layered and inclusive stories. They believe creative interference once again overshadowed a writer’s powerful and original vision.
Now, many hope Maddock Films reconsiders this idea and explores same-sex love stories in future projects within the horror-comedy universe.
