Pulkit Samrat and Varun Sharma’s upcoming comedy Rahu Ketu has received a U/A 16+ certificate from the CBFC, though not without several changes. The clearance arrived just days before the film’s scheduled January 16 release, ensuring it reaches theatres on time.
One of the most notable changes was the removal of the popular Kantara scream, a sound widely recognised after the 2022 blockbuster. The film reportedly used it as a comic reference, but the CBFC asked the makers to replace it.
The decision is being viewed alongside recent sensitivities, especially after Ranveer Singh’s Kantara inspired mimicry during Dhurandhar promotions faced criticism. With Rahu Ketu also attempting a spoof-like usage, the edit appears to have avoided further backlash.
Other censor modifications included replacing visuals of drug sniffing and snorting, removing alcohol brand names, changing a middle finger gesture to a pinky finger, and altering a dialogue. The makers were also asked to submit authentication for a Sanskrit shloka.
Rahu Ketu reunites the Fukrey duo of Pulkit Samrat and Varun Sharma, with Vipul Vig, writer of the Fukrey franchise, making his directorial debut. Despite the familiar pairing, the trailer received mixed reactions for its loud and forced humour.
While the censor edits may have toned down some gags, the bigger question is whether the final film can rise above perceptions of cringe comedy. With its cosmic comedy setup, Rahu Ketu now carries modest expectations.
