In 2018, Dharma Productions announced Takht as one of its most ambitious films. The project was planned for a 2021 release. However, the pandemic delayed progress, and the film was eventually shelved, raising questions about its future.
Karan Johar has now shared an update on the project. He clarified that Takht is not being revived immediately. At the same time, he stated that the film is not completely shelved and still holds importance for him.
Johar described Takht as one of his strongest screenplays. He expressed hope of bringing it to life at some point. While there is no timeline yet, the possibility of revival continues to interest fans and industry observers.
The film was conceived as a Mughal-era drama based on a royal power struggle. It featured a large ensemble cast including Ranveer Singh, Vicky Kaushal, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Bhumi Pednekar, Janhvi Kapoor, and Anil Kapoor.
Ranveer Singh and Vicky Kaushal were set to portray Aurangzeb and Dara Shikoh. Their casting added depth and scale to the narrative. The project promised strong performances within a grand historical setting.
Takht also stood out within Johar’s filmography. Known for emotional dramas and ensemble films, he was set to explore a large-scale period story. The film aimed to present a different visual style and storytelling approach.
The scale and theme created high expectations among audiences. Many were eager to see how Johar would handle a historical subject. The project was expected to blend grandeur with intense character-driven drama.
The film’s subject also raises concerns in the current climate. Historical narratives often face scrutiny and debate. A Mughal-era story could attract attention and possible controversy during its release.
For now, Takht remains uncertain. There is no clear timeline for its production or release. Whether Karan Johar will revive the project or keep it on hold will depend on future developments.
