Karan Johar has finally revealed why Virat Kohli, one of India’s top cricketers, has never appeared on Koffee With Karan. Speaking with Sania Mirza on her podcast, he admitted that the Hardik Pandya–KL Rahul controversy still affects his decisions.
That episode drew huge backlash after both cricketers made remarks labelled as misogynistic. The uproar led to disciplinary action from the BCCI, including temporary suspensions, and forced Johar to rethink how his celebrity chat show handles sensitive conversations.
Karan Johar said the controversy made him cautious about inviting cricketers, even someone as popular as Virat Kohli. He acknowledged his friendship with Anushka Sharma, who has been on the show several times, but clarified that he never approached Kohli for an appearance.
He added that after the Pandya–Rahul episode, he prefers to avoid cricketers altogether. Johar said some personalities are unlikely to agree to come on the show anyway, so he no longer reaches out to them.
This selective approach reflects how Koffee With Karan has adapted to an audience that reacts strongly to insensitive content. The show’s producers now focus on guests and conversations that avoid potential backlash or controversy.
Over time, Koffee With Karan has been criticised for its changing tone, games, and guest choices. Johar’s caution mirrors how the entertainment industry now operates under constant social media scrutiny, where one misstep can create long-term consequences.
The impact of that single episode continues to shape the show’s guest list years later. It stands as a reminder of how public outrage can redefine creative decisions in India’s celebrity television space.
